Campo-Formio: ¡Música corrosiva con sonido crudo, pero refrescante!

Entrevista a Campo-Formio

"... Música corrosiva con sonido crudo, pero refrescante ..." Eso es precisamente lo que los integrantes de Campo-Formio quieren transmitir a través de sus composiciones musicales, y a mi entender, cumplen su propósito. Esta banda, que aunque es poco el tiempo que lleva presentándose, contagia con mucha energía y comunica una presencia escenénica que muy pocas agrupaciones musicales de hoy tienen.

1. ¿Cómo surge Campo-Formio?

-Fernando: Campo-Formio surge con la muerte de Rafy Jiménez, mi padrastro. Cuando Rafy muere de cáncer en noviembre del 2007, comencé a crear composiciones influenciadas por la parte escatológica de su muerte. Después, en enero del 2008 me mude a París a estudiar y a vivir por un semestre y allí continué componiendo canciones influenciadas por la misma temática. Cuando volví a Puerto Rico en agosto, me embarqué en la tarea de buscar músicos que quisieran ayudarme a montar y a ornamentar con sus respectivos instrumentos las canciones ya compuestas. Para la laboriosa tarea de tocar bajo le pregunte a Ricardo Pérez, ex guitarrista de Los Retortijones y Fuerza G, y él aceptó. Buscar un buen baterista es bien difícil y me acordé de Diego Bernal que había tomado un curso de español introductorio en 1er año de universidad conmigo. Diego no se había quitao' de la batería por todos estos años, tocó en varias agrupaciones como Oberdebaigot y otras más. Actualmente toca con Teodoro Portuano y los neandertales, y es colaborador musical de Los Nervios. Así que le pregunté si tomaba el reto de tocar batería y con su jocosa sonrisa aceptó. Comenzamos a practicar a finales de agosto y el primer show fue el 1ro de noviembre. Un dato curioso es que de todas las composiciones que hemos montado y creado hasta ahora sólo tres son de las que compuse en París, así que tenemos mucho material por montar.

2. ¿De dónde surge el nombre de la banda?

-Fernando: El nombre surge de una estación de Metro en París que se llamaba "Campo-Formio". Yo solía tocar ahí de vez en cuando las composiciones que tenía y me pasaron muchas cosas graciosas. Después busqué información y me enteré que eran unos tratados napoleónicos que no tienen ningún tipo de importancia para mí, aunque sí me parece curioso el aspecto histórico del nombre.

3. ¿Cuál es la propuesta musical de la banda?

-Fernando: Música corrosiva con un sonido crudo pero refrescante. Queremos que la gente grite, cante, baile, ame y sobre todo que odien. En fin, explosión energética pa’ las masas. Anarquistas conscientes del subconsciente.
-Ricardo: Juntos tratamos de hacer sonar esas notas y melodías chillantes las cuales cambian nuestro estado anímico durante el set.
-Diego: “... Menos haciendo más... ” Esa es la expresión que resume mi perspectiva sobre lo que hacemos. Es la primera vez que participo de un trío y lo que en mi opinión tratamos de hacer es empujar nuestras habilidades al máximo para luego disparar con lo que logremos crear.

4. ¿Cómo se da la colaboración musical y de ideas en la banda?

-Fernando: Las fórmulas de cada banda son privadas. Yo compongo las guitarras y las líricas; Ricardo el bajo y Diego la batería. Campo-Formio somos los tres juntos y los tres tenemos la libertad de hacer lo que queramos con nuestros instrumentos.
-Diego: Alguien comparte una idea que es procesada por otros dos filtros y al final tenemos una canción.

5. ¿Cuáles son las influencias musicales de Campo-Formio?

-Fernando: Creo que los tres estamos constantemente expuestos a música nueva y vieja que de alguna manera u otra adquirimos. Yo personalmente escucho mucho proto punk, punk, post punk, garage, shoegaze, mucho lo fi fuzzy shit y otros géneros y estilos que me nutren positivamente. Alguna que otra banda muy importante para mí como The Fall, Buzzcocks preferiblemente con Howard Devoto cantando, Make-Up, el cd Tommy de The Wedding Present, The Cramps, Flipper, Pixies y Explosions in the Sky. No puedo negar que todo ese pop basura que escuchaba mi hermana cuando era un niño se encuentre en mi memoria implícita.
-Ricardo: Podría decir que mis influencias personales son bandas en específico tales como The Smiths, Devo, Cardiacs, Expulsados, At The Drive In, entre otras.
-Diego: Me parece que los tres tenemos raíces en el punk y post punk. Además de esto, estoy influenciado por demasiada música pero para tratar de ser específico estoy bastante influenciado por el ska, reggae y el hardcore.

6. ¿Cuáles son los planes inmediatos y futuros de la banda?

-Fernando: Pues ahora mismo estamos en procesos de acabar el primer Ep de la banda; ya se grabó y tendrá 7 tracks aunque en realidad son como nueve canciones y un bonus track. El cd release será el próximo 13 de junio en La Respuesta, junto con Tach.dé y Odradek. Tenemos como cuatro canciones más para otro release futuro y todas las composiciones de París que serán para el primer LP. Por ahora estamos pompeaos tocando en Puerto Rico y si se da alguna oportunidad de ir a fuera a tocar, estoy seguro que nos montamos.

7. ¿Con cuáles otras bandas han compartido tarima?

-Fernando: Hemos tocado con Juventud Crasa, Mackandal, Odradek, Fantasmes, Hollywood Blues (Garage de Louisiana), Coleco, Cougar City, El Ejercito de las Boinas Negras, jesus christ scientist, Gato Eléctrico, Hay Silencio, El Oso y la Pantera, AHD, Jorge Castro y Homenaje a una Bella Canción, Go Organ! Y La Bella y las Bestias.
